| I'd be interested to hear Rick's thoughts on this, as well as anyone else. For the last (almost) four years I have led a youth group on a volunteer basis at my local church. In that time we have used a couple different curriculums - including the AWANA curriculum, a Guys/Girls curriculum, etc. But mainly we have designed our own curriculum. Current we divide the youth group into two main parts - a small group from 6:30-7:15 that is divided by gender and topical/practical in nature (e.g. How to Relate to Girls, How to Read Your Bible, How to Relate to Parents, etc.), the other from 8-9 is an in-depth book by book study. We have looked at Luke, then we studied Colossians, currently we are studying Acts.
I've been working hard at designing some sort of comprehensive curriculum with an overall purpose for the entirety of the teen's time in the youth group, and I was wondering if anyone was aware of anything out there similar - or if they had done such. I want to have intentionality in our teaching from start to finish. For example, I've just created a six point central statement of who we want to be as Christians that I want to use as the basis for deciding how to tackle topics in the small group. In the large group, I like what we are doing, but we can't finish all the books of the Bible before a teen graduates, so I'm trying to determine which to focus on. At this point I think Luke/Acts and Romans are good choices. Then I probably want to add in some historical - e.g. Genesis, Exodus, Judges, Joshua, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, probably some prophetic overview and maybe an in-depth on Revelation (the teens love Revelation), also probably some exposure to Poetic/Wisdom.
Thoughts? Criticisms?

| | I am currently looking for similar ideas. We have been letting ss teachers chose what they would like to teach from different books. Mainly because we are a new group and spend most time getting to know the youth. Also many do not come regularly to follow a curriculum. But I would like to have in place a 4 year plan for our jr. and sr. program. We have tried some expensive curriculum but the youth seem to lose interest after a while. And it can be a budget buster if it gets thrown away. I am not a pastor so would also like to know what are the most important books to study over 4 years. That way I could get books on the subject and still let the teachers work in their teaching styles. It would be imteresting to see what comes up. |

I have the book and think that it's a great resource for Youth Pastors and how to plan their Youth Ministry. | Take a look at the Journey to Adulthood program by Leader Resources. WWW.Leaderresources.com. It is a 3 tiered program based on 2 premises: Manhood and Womanhood are free gifts from God. Adulthood must be earned. It's taught in 3 2year segments: 6th & 7th grade, or 7th & 8th grade: Rite 13, J2A (Journey to Adulthood) 8th & 9th grades or 9th & 10th grades, and YAC (Young Adults in the Church) for 11th and 12th grade. The curriculum is all layed out, yet, it gives you the flexibility to take where your youth are in their faith journey, and in the events happening in their lives and apply lessons and scripture to it. This is not a top down - teacher must fill the brains of youth with information approach. This is much more experiential - Jesus meets us where we are and walks with us on our journey as we discover more about Him. The leaders will learn as much as the youth. Check it out!
