PLEASE HELP!!!! I am having a hard time getting the daily dramas for the marketplace to come together.  This is our first year with the HLA.  I don't have enough people and only 4 weeks until VBS.  Can I simply not do the dramas or are they very important?

Thanks.

The drama's are short and simple but they are incredibly important.  You can't leave them out.  We had trouble our first year, too, so we used family leaders, shop keepers, teens, Jr. High, people who popped in just to do the drama & left again - even me, the director!  We even used a couple of people twice and trusted imaginations to get past that problem.  Once you get past the first year and people understand exactly what it is all about, it is much much easier to get people to do the drama's.  Hang in there and be creative about your actors.  It truly will be easier next year.

Ditto to everything Debi said!  We have always used shopkeepers, game leaders, etc. in the dramas and we have also always had people who performed multiples roles over the course of the week.  We've done all the HLA programs and I can tell you that we've never had a child even remark about it.  It's "real," but they also rise to the occasion and understand that what they're seeing is a portrayal.

One thing that helps me recruit is that I tell people that it only takes 5 minutes!  I sort of market it as one of the easiest ways to be a part of VBS.  And like Debi said -- you'll only struggle this first year.  They'll be back over and over once they do it.  And please don't panic about your time frame.  I hadn't even started recruiting my actors 4 weeks in advance.  Some of them signed on as late as last week and our program is this week.

I understand the problem finding people to do the dramas! I have a hard time finding someone to do any scripted part, including the shopkeepers.  We only did HLA once before with Gallilee by the Sea and they had the dramas acted out on the DVD.  It was probably just meant as an example but we showed that to the kids. Not the best alternative, but I had to make do.  This year we may be skipping the dramas.  I hate to, and I know they are very important, but sometimes you can only do so much and have to prioritize.

This year my priority has become finding someone to be Brutus (My husband is Paul because he did say "I'll help you with whatever you need" LOL) and getting my shopkeepers to get into their roles, not just show kids the crafts. If they jump on board and agree to do the dramas, We'll try it.  I will know after our volunteer meeting tonight!

We just finished our VBS tonight and as I have been thinking over the week I realized that tonights drama was actually a very brave drama.  It was very good and powerful... and very different from the last 2 years.  The last 2 years we had Jesus show up and it was a very upbeat ending.  This year, a shop gets shut down and it is very serious.  People did boo but many kids were a bit upset.  It was a great opportunity to talk about being brave and sharing God's love no matter what and how God's love is worth sharing.  It really opened the door for family leaders and other adults to have great conversations with kids.  I have to admit that I live in Northern California where being a christian is not always a popular thing so it was great to have the kids get a chance to learn about being brave and that God's love is truly something to be shared no matter what.  I want to encourage other directors not to shy away from this drama.  It can be a very powerful tool.

We just finished our HLA VBS on Friday night. I worked out my drama members for Friday's drama on Thursday night. Somehow it all came together and Friday was the best drama of the week. One of our other shopkeepers continually tried to come to the metalworker's rescue and intervene on her behalf with the soldiers. She failed to keep the shop from closing of course and during the final time through, the soldiers told her they were closing her shop as well for being disruptive and traitorous to the Emporer. The kids rioted and told the soldiers that they could NOT close the metalworkers shop because she loves Jesus and stood side by side between the soldiers and the shop. It was an absolute laugh for the rest of us, but also gave us an opportunity to talk to the kids about having courage to stand up for Jesus.

Isaiah 40:31
but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

a drama thought--
this came about because I have a new drama leader this year, and because of the festus drama on day one occurring multiple times. My director just assumed that 10 minutes after the market opens meant for each group, too, so he has been doing the drama twice a night. After seeing how well it worked, I just let him! This is so much easier than dragging kids out of pauls house, or the cave, or inside from the games, so everybody gets a better sense of the drama.
also, this is year 3 for us, and we have also done NIB twice, so this is our 6th HA. I think everyone in our church but about 6 of our oldest seniors and one guy who works nights are involved somehow. No problem filling the dramas, and after seeing HA dramas before, EVERYONE is doing a GREAT job. We have 42 volunteers, and our church only has 95 members!
