We decorated our underground church in heavy black sheeting to make it really dark. Then my daughter, who took on the roll of Lucia, requested white paint markers. If a group finished early, she allowed the children to use the paint pens to write messages to Paul on the "walls" and practice drawing their fish symbol.
We didn't tell "Paul" (who just happened to be played by my husband) and at the end of VBS, not only were the kids parents amazed at what they saw in the underground church, "Paul" was choked up with emotion to read the messages because he know then that the kids really got the message of the studies.
It was really amazing and the parents were totally blown away by the effect the writings created, especially when illuminated by the "camp fire" flame light!!

What an inspired idea! Do you have pictures?
What kind of "heavy black sheeting" did you use - was it plastic?

YES WE ALL WANT TO KNOW SHEETING R PLASTIC.......WHAT A GREAT IDEA .....TOLD MY DIRECTOR AND SHE FOUND THAT IDEA AMAZING...THE WORDS OF R CHILDREN I SOOOOO AMAZING AND WITH A STORY LIKE THAT!!!!! IT IS TRUELY AMAZING WHAT R CHILDREN CAN DO TO R HEARTS ....THAT IS A STORY THAT I WILL CARRY WITH ME FOREVER...THXS 4 SHARING THAT WITH US!!!!!!CANT WAIT TO TRY AND C WHAT R KIDDOS SAY

The black sheeting is the heavy black plastic found in the painting section of Home Depot/Lowes, etc. We used one roll and had plenty to achieve the effect we wanted. We chose this over black trash bags because it was thicker and really blocked out all of the light.
I will try to get photos from our photographer at church this weekend and see if I can post them - it was really very awesome to walk into the cave and see all the writings of the children! Plus the parents were really amazed by it as well!

| I did my class with black bed sheets and replaced the light bulbs with black lights. Then you can have the kids write on paper with neon highlighters and they light up tremedously in the room.
