Position Description: Director of Student Ministries (Part-time)

 

Purpose

 

To provide leadership and oversight of a quality ministry to Middle School and High School students.  Responsibility is inclusive of youth:  Middle School (6th to 8th grades) and High School (9th – 12th grades).

 

Categories of Function

 

Oversee

·         Explore and interpret trends in the field of youth ministry and introduce new and creative ways of reaching out to young people with the love of Jesus Christ.

·         Provide direction for all youth programming and activities.

·         Ensure that the spiritual needs of the youth in our church are cared for.

·         Establish and nurture a personal relationship with youth group members and their families.

·         Help the church family capture a vision of the vital importance of ministry to youth.

·         Encourage youth to participate in activities that involve the entire congregation.

·         Prepare a monthly article for the “Communique” church newsletter.

·         Oversee youth fund raising activities - ensure that funds are available for scholarships and that activities are affordable.

·         Monitor the expenditure of funds budgeted for youth programs.  Will make budget requisites annually for the consideration of the Board of Trustees.

·         Be accessible to youth throughout the week, with exception to days off and vacation.

·         Assist the Ministry Staff with other pastoral duties as needed.

·         Meet weekly with Josh Heimiller and other staff members for the purpose of prayer, planning and communication.

 

Equip

·         Recruit and train leaders (adults and students) for youth ministry.

·         Establish a personal relationship with, and minister to,  leaders.

 

Teach

·         Interpret and select biblically sound resources to be used in youth ministry.

·         Strive to disciple youth to maturity in Christ.

 

Pray

·         Pray daily for the youth group members and the youth leaders.


Programming Expectations

 

·         Responsible for providing Middle School and High School youth meetings on Sundays and Wednesdays.

·         Responsible for providing summer camps for Middle School and High School groups.

·         Responsible for providing at least one mission trip each year.

·         Weekend camps can be organized, but are not required (traditionally there have been winter camps and fall camps.)

·         Provide a parent ministry by producing a quarterly newsletter and calendar, and/or holding quarterly parent meetings.

·         Upon hiring, come up with a specific ministry action plan. This is to be completed in cooperation with Josh Heimiller within the first month of employment.

 

Personal Requirements

 

·         Be a professing, growing, passionate follower of Jesus Christ of exemplary personal character.

·         Be a leader with a burden for reaching the lost and discipling them to maturity in Christ.

·         Have a commitment to pursuing continuing educational opportunities for the purpose of professional and personal spiritual development.

·         Believe in, and be committed to, a multiple-staff team ministry.

·         Possess the ability to initiate and maintain relationships with a wide variety of people.

·         Be able to teach and lead youth, parents, and volunteers effectively.

·         Be in complete harmony with the doctrinal statement and vision of the church (Connect. Grow. Reach.)

·         Maintain a consistent devotional life.

·         Become involved in the congregational life of laceName w:st="on">ParksidelaceName> laceType w:st="on">ChurchlaceType>.

·         Training in Youth Ministry and experience directing a youth program in a local church are desirable.

 

Position Renumeration

 

·         Starting Salary:  depends on experience.

·         Hours: 20 per week (establish weekly schedule with Josh Heimiller.)

·         Church will provide reimbursement for continuing education events, seminars, conventions, etc. as approved by Senior Pastor.

·         Paid Holidays: New Year’s day, Memorial day, Independence day, Labor day, Thanksgiving day, Christmas day, Washington’s birthday, and Veteran’s day.

·         Sick days: up to ten paid sick days per year.

·         One week of paid vacation per year.

·         Performance Review will normally be conducted once a year by Josh Heimiller. However, during the first year of employment, reviews will be conducted at 3 months and 6 months to ensure good communication.

·         Position is indefinite, but may be terminated upon 30 days written notice by the Board of Trustees or Director of Student Ministries.  Time may be shortened by mutual agreement.

 

 

*Any of the above duties and programming expectations can be changed if there are good philosophical or theological reasons. Any changes will be approved by Josh Heimiller and the Senior Pastor.

Director of Student Ministries

First Presbyterian Church of Bakersfield, CA is an active and growing downtown congregation of 1000 active members. We seek a Christ-centered leader who can provide leadership and oversight to all student ministries, 7th-college. Position supervises full-time Director of Jr. High Ministries and Administrator of Student Ministries. This person will be directly responsible for all Sr. High Ministries, accountable to the Executve Pastor and the CE Committee of Session.

We seek someone called to Youth Ministry as a career, several years' experience preferred. Must be a capable organizer, recruiter, and a Christian of both emotional and faithful maturity.
