we had our vbs last week. the kids had a terrific time. it went very well. our props were wonderful. it was a lot of work! more than the usual vbs we do from group.
my question is did you like it as a vbs? i have mixed opinions on it.
mainly i guess my problem is that in all the sections except for paul's house, the underground church, and family time they weren't getting taught anything about jesus or salvation. they were getting more of how the romans/pagans did things; sort of a history lesson in those pagan things. i didn't like that at all.
we all agreed that we didn't like that some of us were not christians. it seemed wrong to say we weren't followers of christ...and some of our kids really didn't know how to take their sunday school teachers saying those things. so the ones who were non-christians *converted* on the second day.
we also did not do the marketplace booth that sold the animals for sacrifices.
some of the games weren't fun. they were hard and not fun for all age groups. the favorite game hands down was the chariot races. instead of just pulling a piece of cardboard, i got refrigerator boxes, cut them down into a chariot shape, spray painted them, painted nail heads and a shiled on the fronts...then i took jump ropes and poked them through the cardboard from the front and tied a huge knot in the ends. then i took a pool noodle, cut it down and made a slit in it and covered the jump rope with it. then i covered the rope/noodles in with silver duct tape.
we had races with some kids being the horses and others the soldiers. each kid got to pull at least once and each kid got to ride..it was so fun! the kids begged to keep the chariots and do races on all our fun days they enjoyed it so much!
so anyway i have mixed feelings about the content and a few of the games weren't so fun. anyone else care to share their thoughts and feelings on this?
~k~jesus loves you...yes!...you!

| I agree with you that the games were kind of disappointing. We didn't even do the suggested games on days 4 and 5. We didn't have wading pools and I didn't want to waste alot of money on the flour. But the kids liked the knucklebones game and loved the chariot races. We just substituted other games on the other days. I actually liked how the children got to learn about ancient Rome. I think it can bring the Bible to life for them more if they can imagine what it was like in the past. I didn't feel like we were teaching them anything pagan and I really think our kids are savvy enough to know when we are pretending or playing a role. When one of our leaders said she was Jewish and didn't believe Jesus was God's son, her 7 year old asked "Haven't you read the bible?!" I think it is important for our kids to realize that not everyone believes the same way they do and how to talk about their faith and support it to others. We are Catholic in the Bible Belt and I know people will attack our faith. It happened to my daughter when she visited a church of a different denomination with a friend and was confronted by the adult teacher who launched into a lengthy and hostile attack on her beliefs and told her she was going to Hell in front of all the other teens. It was very upsetting to her. I think it is important for our kids to feel comfortable from a young age discussing religion with others, including adults who have different beliefs (even if they are just pretending) and they get to do that in the marketplace. I really love how all the teaching fits together with the Holyland VBS. I actually prefer it to the Easy VBS, though I love that too! Christine

| We just finished ours - it was our first time doing a HLA and we are never going back!!! It was relaxed and fun and we all enjoyed it so much more. We liked the fact that not all of the shoppe keepers were Christians - it gave us so many opportunities! The children could ask questions about their faith and the shoppe keepers did the same. (practicing witnessing to others and standing strong on their faith!! - skills we need as adults!) The market place dramas pulled a lot of those things altogether though. Watching how the people dealt with problems depending on their faith. We felt this VBS brought the Bible to life for the children and adults alike. This was a more spiritually moving and bonding experience than our church has ever experienced in the past. It was so relaxed - we loved it! Teresa Firek North Liberty Pres!
