Another VBS coordinator gave me the heads up for guildcraftinc dot com. Browsing through their VBS supplies I saw an idea we will probably use: making shields of faith and swords of the spirit out of cardboard. This activity fits particularly well with Day 4: God's love saves us.

Does anyone have any suggestions for making these?

We did these with our preschoolers and they loved them.  We traced an 8" circle on the front of each shield and had the kids draw a picture inside the circle.  Outside the circle, they simply colored silver or gold.  The shields don't come with any sort of handle.  We hot-glued a toilet paper tube to the back when they were finished coloring them and this made a great handle.

We also make shields in our Metalshop as one of our crafts. The kids loved it!  Using an overhead, we traced sheild shapes onto cardboard that we were fortunate enought to have donated to us by a parishoner.  We punch two holes a few inches apart (vertically) in the middle of hte shield and tied a string through it for a easy handle.

At shop time, the kids covered their shields with foil and stuck on foamy stickers of your choice. They adhered well and the kids liked adding a personal touch. We had played around with the idea of having the "etch" their shields with popsicle sticks to give that metal-working look to it. But, they had a great time with the stickers, so I'm glad we kept it simple.

The boys and the girls loved this project. And to think it was a last minute thrown-in!  We did skip the swords, as we feared that it would excite the boys a little too much.
