| My church always does a 5-day, 3 hours per day morning VBS because some members in our community count on this. I've never done a HLA and am hoping we can stretch things out a bit. Our opening time for any VBS is always half an hour, so I've made Extollo this length rather than the allotted 15 minutes. Based on other people's responses, I've made the time with Paul and the Underground Church 20 minutes because our Pastor is playing Paul and I know he can stretch it out. I've also made the marketplace 40 minutes instead of 30, and added 5 minutes to several other activities to add up to the full 3 hours. My concern is that the kids will race through activities and be bored, so I would appreciate any time-filler tips you can provide. Also, does anyone have a substitute game idea to replace the one that uses all that flour? (I gave the manual to the games leader, so I can't quite recall what it was, but I know we don't have the budget to get that much flour.) Also, can we use regular clothespins (modern ones) for the knucklebones activity or am I better off buying dog biscuits? Finally, would it be really silly to use stuffed animals as the animal sacrifice sales? We really couldn't get live ones due to cost and liability issues. Thanks for any help you can provide!

We are also doing a 3 hour Rome. Our schedule looks like this: 20 min Extollo (5 min will probably be announcements), 15 min family time 20 min Paul's house/underground/games 40 in the market place 15 min family time 15 min Extollo We add 5 min per "station" for travel time and quick bathroom breaks. As far as time fillers, I plan on telling the family time leaders to let the children run around outside and burn off come energy if they have extra time. In the market place we have planned on the toga shop and food shop to be time fillers We are just using clothes pins for the knucklebone game. I saw the idea of using sand instead of flour on this board. Can you ask for donations from people in your church? We are not doing the animal sacrifice sales.

| You can find the old-fashioned clothespins at the Dollar Store. We are asking the congregation for donations of bags of flour (5 lb. bags, though - 10 lb. are too hard to find.) We will double bag them in ziplocs, and hopefully will be able to donate them to the food pantry when VBS is done. We too are doing three hours, with a schedule similar to the one already postd. After two years of feeling rushed with Group's 'Easy" VBS, we are looking forward to a slower pace. As a time-filler for kids in the marketplace, we are doing a giant ichtuhs mosiac using construction paper pieces. It will hang on the wall, and as kids finish up other crafts they can come and stick a few paper squares on it. We'll put it up for display in sanctuary the week after VBS. Who knows - it may turn out spectacular and find a permanent home somewhere around the church!

Love, love, love the mosaic ichthys idea. Our VBS starts next week so I have time to copy your idea. Thanks so much for sharing!

| This was our first year doing Rome so we did a rotation instead of the market place and had crafts and other marketplace actities were set up if they got done early., paul and the underground church and snacks with 5 minutes traveling time. Many teachers said there was too much free time. We had a closing program so it would have been nice to have a music rotation or session so the kids could learn the songs, especially for the younger ones to go their pace and older once their own as far as learning them.

We're in the middle of a 3 hour morning, 5 day VBS, so it was essential to stretch this to 3 hours. We're half way through the week and it's been NO problem to fill the time! I can't imagine trying to squeeze it all into two hours!
Extollo - 20 minutes, add a song or a testimony
Family time - 25 minutes
Then rotation: We took the "olive garden" - food shop - out of the marketplace. With a registration of over 100 kids, we envisioned 50+ kids swamping the food court (everybody wants a snack!!). So we created a rotation of Paul, Underground Church and Olive garden - each about 8 minutes long, to create a 25 minute block.
Another 25 minute block was the games center.
Finally we had the marketplace for a 50 minute time block. Only Monday - when the drama was outside with games - did the time feel a bit long there. The rest of the week with a drama happening in the marketplace the time has been no problem.
Finish with Family time of 25 minutes, and then a 15 minute Extollo.

We did 2-1/2 hrs and left 4 minutes in between each time slot for "travel time". If we don't leave time for travel, we run behind.... It never fails!!!
