I am very frustrated by the lack of support our church gives VBS.  It is like pulling teeth to get them to pick up a donation slip and get something needed for VBS.  When you say something about VBS they just look at you with a blank stare.  I don't think anyone knows the amount of work it takes to do this program or cares for that matter.  It is frustrating both me and my asst. director plus our pastor expresses great frustration as well.  What can we do to get people to support us and understand what we do?

Beth,
First, and you're probably already doing it, is to pray -- and ask your congregation to pray also. The Lord has put it in your heart to do VBS -- ask Him for the resources and people needed to make it happen. Then, watch and listen for where He is providing the answer(s). Ask your congregation to pray for specific needs -- supplies, station leaders, crew leaders, campers -- it helps for them to hear exactly what you are in need of. Then watch for 'unconventional' ways God might provide for your VBS... Is there a smaller church that has the people willing to do VBS, but no space or resources to do it on their own? Maybe you can partner-up to share people/resources and hold one VBS together. Do you have any active youth groups in your area, whether it's your own church's or another group, that could provide teens willing to be your crew leaders? Just some thoughts -- only you will be able to see/hear where God is pointing you...

Also, when it comes to donations, or lack thereof... don't be afraid to let your congregation know what IS NOT going to happen because you don't have what you need. Worst case scenario -- VBS doesn't happen, or is only a short 'worship' time with no crafts/snack/etc. Sometimes it's hard to wait on God's time -- He seems to like to keep us on the edge of our seats every year in some area.

I will keep you and your VBS in prayer. Keep "Watching for God" and His answers to your needs -- and trust that He WILL answer, even if it feels like you're running out of time; God's time is hardly ever OUR time.

God Bless!
~Cassie

I had the same problem, and I felt bad asking for money because there were kids raising money to go to camps and the church was doing fundraisers for a new building. I felt like I was just going to suck people dry. But I stood up in front of the church and explained to them that this was a HUGE community missions outreach, and the more funds and prayers we have the more children we could invite. I asked them to remember VBS when they were younger and the impact it had on them. I talked to the preacher two weeks before hand and asked him if he felt like he could do a sermon or at least mention the impact of VBS. It was awesome people said that it really reminded them of the importance of VBS.
