I made thunder clouds for an autumn fest at my son's school by stuffing black trash bags with tissue paper and mini christmas lights on the blink setting. I hung 3 bags in groups and they flashed and flickered like clouds in a storm!

I had a few ideas I thought I would share as they are CHEAP and easy but could really look good!

I thought of taking packages of stuffing, pulling it apart a little and hanging it with fishing line in clumps like fluffy white clouds

or doing the thunder cloud idea with white bags, white tissue and the white strand mini lights. Prob not flickering.

I thought about making a translucent sun to hang sort of in front of a window or spotlight. Melt different shades of yellow crayons in wax paper... I'm thinking I should improve on this but I'm brainstorming here!

I think you can buy cheap drop clothes that are a pale blue... hang those on the walls with our clouds and sun suspended in front.

Make waves out of card board (large sheets) or foam... layer them in front of one another with some space in between to give it some depth.

Oh and I discovered that brown paper lunch sacks make great planks of wood! Just draw a little wood grain on them while you are watching tv and before you know it... you have too many!

Well... I'm reinforcing my status as overly excited about VBS by posting this on day one of our crocodile dock vbs... ha ha! I'm a new director this year and I am LOVING it!

We have plenty of time to brainstorm!
Thanks,
Layla

What great ideas! If you have any pictures you should put them up on this site so that we can see! Who was the nice picture compiling person for Crocodile Dock? That was so helpful - to have all of the pictures of the decorating together in one place.

In one of the many OT catalogs that I get, they have a 30ft x 4ft vinyl backdrop of the ocean and another of the deck of a ship.  Only $15 each.   Don't exactly know how I might use them, but it is added to my list of resources for next year.

Please excuse my ignorance... but is it 30 wide and only 4 ft high? Or ?? I'm trying to understand it! It looks great but I'm confused!

Guess my brain is tired from todays VBS!

The layered look of waves is probaly going to work great for me because I have three steps up to our main decorating area. If I make the cardboard wave cut outs about 17 inches high and "lean" them against the back of each step, I'll have three rising surges to my stage and with the extra height of the wave peaks going beyond step level, I should be able to corral some inflated balloons between each wave layer.....then a giant blue tarp on the flat part of my stage, more balloons, and a giant cardboard boat made out of 7 refrigerator boxes (thanks to whomever found mrmcgroovy.com for the boat ideas and the sea of balloons). Our big white movie screen drops from the ceiling so I'm almost going to have to make it my main sail but unfortunately that sticks me with a square shape, but maybe I can add width to the sides and then bow them in......Add some scene setter backdrops from OT and the Bible Buddies that I make out of cardboard and/or foam and I do believe I have my main stage figured out already! And Croc Dock JUST ended last Thursday!

FYI: I intend to ask 25 people to bring me (or sponsor with their breath and fingers on the spot) 20 inflated balloons to Church on the first Sunday that VBS starts - I am DEFINITELY NOT going to try and inflate AND tie AND transport 500 balloons!

There's no need to be out-of-breath...

You can get a hand pump for less than $5 at most party stores. Or, check out Amazon.com.

You can use an electric air compressor to blow up balloons. Purchase a nozzle to fit the end of it and it makes it really fast.

That foamy fake snow stuff(kinda like the stuffing in stuffed animals, that you pull apart to make like village sets and stuff)  would  make great clouds. I think Ill have to stock up at Christmas time- its pretty cheap from what I recall!
