My real job is as a Network Engineer. Youth Ministry is a volunteer labor of love for me at this point. Anyways, I've worked with computers since I was a kid (and my cat just sat on my lap and boy is she stinky). I thought I'd drop a few thoughts on how I've combined my technical expertise in designing websites for my church and youth group.
Currently I am using a free platform called DotNetNuke. You can find a number of "web hosts" that will install this platform for you. Hosting generally costs $5-$15/mo. DotNetNuke is a complete Content Management System that allows you to build a website without needing to know programming languages or lots of technical details. Beyond just content you can add a number of "modules" that allow features like blogs, forums, and etc.
For those who are looking to start a church website, I'd highly recommend it. It still won't be free - you'll still have to pay for hosting and probably for a nice template (that controls the look and feel of the site), but this is much better than the thousands one could spend on a website. Its also nice because just about anyone who is somewhat computer literate (e.g. knows how to use forums like these) can create and maintain the site. On the other hand, the platform is powerful enough that it can be used by people who understand programming, etc.
If you have questions about this area, I'd be happy to give my thoughts on building websites for your church or youth group, just post a reply and I'll see if I know anything about the issues confronting you. :-)
