I like to have our VBS the second week that school is out for 2 reasons. The first is that since there are really only about 2 excellant vbs's, our chance of duplicating them is high. The second is that if we wait to long our South Florida weather starts to get way too hot for our outdoor activities.

I direct at a large church that gets used for a lot of public events so I have to book my dates a year in advance to make sure I get the building for a week and I have to coordinate with our youth director so its not the same week that the teens go to camp, otherwise I won't have enough crew leaders!

Ours is always around the third week in July.  People plan their vacations around it!  The schools get out mid June and then the new school year starts mid August.  We do it the same week as Junior High Church camp so most of the Junior High kids are actually gone that week.  They're too old (and cool) to be a part of VBS but too young to be any help-- too squirelly.  It works for us.

It used to seem that everyone around here did right after school got out or at least in June. Now it seems everyone has moved to July (us included) and there are about 5 other VBS the same week as ours.

My church has their VBS early in the summer. We always have it in June and churches in the area mostly do their VBS programs in July. Group VBS is really booming in churches around me! That's one reason that we're switching publishers for VBS 2010. Almost every church in my town uses Group's VBS. At one of the VBS programs that I volunteered at, one kid said that he had already been to a Crocodile Dock at another church and they were going to this one as well for the week. I'd love to do Group's Holy Land Adventure but our church doesn't have the volunteers, budget, or space to do it. As Group's VBS continues to get popular and more people use it, it gets harder for churches to have a unique VBS. I wish that Group would have 2 "Easy" VBS programs to choose from each year so churches around me wouldn't be all using the same one. We're thinking of using Group's High Seas Expedition and future Group "Easy" VBS curriculums behind the original year that they are released so more kids would come and it would be a different theme than the rest of the churches have.

God Bless,

Josh

we always plan it for the week before Father's day. Father's Day Sunday our entire worship service is VBS. The Dad's love it.

We did Crocodile Dock the week of July 6th and had a good turnout. This  has been the same time period to do for the past several years and it seems to work for us but next year I'm moving it to the week after (July 12th) because of the July 4th weekend. A lot of our volunteers aren't available to help set up or go away. In the newsletter I sent home with the kids at the end of Dock I put a "SAVE THE DATE" with next years dates.

We have traditionally done our VBS the week that overlaps July and August. We cannot do it before that because the high schools in the area are still in session for summer school and many of our high school aged crew leaders take summer school cl to get those pesky requirments out of the way so they have time to take other cl during the year.

2010 we are doing it the first week in August because I am getting married in July! This year we did it the last week in July. We had several regulars tell us that they were going to be on vacation that week and I'm sure we will encounter that next year as well. There are always going to be conflicts. However, for our community, the end of July/beg of August is best. Then it leaves 2-3 weeks before schools starts to enjoy the end of summer and/or get in another vacation!

Here are the things we work around:

  • 2 weeks of youth camp (can't do it without the teens!)
  • spring baseball/softball
  • county fairs
  • Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Independence Day)
  • high school fall sports practices
  • teacher work schedules (public school teachers have to be in school later than the kids, and we need all of them for VBS!)

This leaves us with only one week in the summer to do VBS, usually the 3rd week in July.  I would love to do it earlier, so it didn't consume my entire summer, but there are some perks to doing it later.  For example, other churches are willing to share their stuff with you!

I noted today, while hauling tables across the street from our Family Life Center to the Fellowship Hall, that it is hot in Texas in August!!!! I think I will stick to an earlier week in the summer. I have spoken to a few members (involved in planning) and discussed the importance of NOT scheduling UM Army the same week as our VBS! I didn't have several teens this year due to a scheduling mishap! Anyhoo, they told me that if I scheduled this UBER-Important event so far in advance... they would make sure NOTHING would interfere! from our church anyway! Thanks for the advice! I made a lovely spreadsheet marking off the dates that wouldn't work and narrowed it down to a few choices. I think it will be the 3rd or 4th week in June. Besides... I'm so excited about decorating next year that I want to do it early in the summer to pass on some goodies to other churches! We are a small church and I know how valuable the talent from another church can be! I LOVE THIS FORUM! Thanks!
