We are in Michigan....so it's never "too hot", LOL. Our vbs is always the same week: the first full week in August. June is full of graduation open houses (I had 7 to go to this year) and weddings, July is the county fair and usually vacation. By August the kids are bored and looking for something to do.
Our town is small: 1800 people, and we are the last vbs of the summer. But, we are always the LARGEST vbs in our town, AND the neighboring larger town. Each year we have more and more kids. This year we had 245 kids and 100+ workers. Fifty one children prayed for salvation. It never fails to bring me to tears. We had more "issues" this year than we usually do: we had to approach the family of one child because the child smelled so bad the other kids were drawing attention to it. The child isn't old enough to really have body odor - this is just a lack of cleanliness. We had one girl that we believe has been molested, so we had to deal with that. And....one of our families had the police involved that week. We've never had to deal with stuff like that during vbs. It was hard to keep focused. But, the outcome was all worth it!!
Blessings to you!

| We tried something different this year and it seemed to work well for us. Since we are not a "neighborhood" church - we are located next to a highway and have people coming from as far as 30 minutes away - we decided to use VBS materials as our Sunday morning program. We started out the first Sunday using the Croc Dock theme but focused on one of our missionary families in Tanzania. We then did 6 more weeks of Croc Dock, and 6 weeks of Rome. The last week of each theme our kids sang for the adult services and we re-capped the highlights of the VBS. Our kids attendance has never been better and quite a few new volunteers took part. I'm looking to recruit them for the rest of the year!

| Don't forget to check the dates of youth camp, preteen camp, mission trips, and pastor vacations ... you don't want VBS to conflict with any of those events .. we schedule ours on aroudn July 12th each year, then I can borrow other churches decorations but it is still before the vacation rush at the end of the summer. I am in TX too .. where are you? Carrie Magnolia, TX (north of Houston)
