I know it's a loaded question, but I am struggling with what I should expect a youth ministry to be for my 11 year old daughter. Just want some basic stuff here! What are ways that an involved youth pastor would be involved in her life so that I can see if she is where she needs to be. I guess I'm comparing everything to what it used to be like when I was young but what else can I compare it to? Please tell me ways that your youth/children's pastor reaches out to your kids so I can have something to base my expectations on.

Mom of two,

the most basic and general answer of what you should expect is for your children to be known and loved. That is the most fundamental of youth/children ministry principles that every parent/guardian should gladly expect. As far as events or ministry opportunities are concerned that will vary based on what is currently happening for the other age groups as well as for the vision of your youth pastor.

I suppose a better question is to ask what is it your looking for? Obviously what ever that expectation is it's not being met. I would love to hear more of your heart.

Loaded question indeed. It has been my experience that parents want a youth pastor to take on the task of being the main Christian influence in a teens life. This, however, is the task of the parent. Like Matt said, the parents should expect their teen to be loved, spiritually fed, and have an upstanding Christian role-model. You should expect your child's safety to be insured while in the youth pastors care.

A youth pastor can only do so much but they can always be an example of a vibrant Christian to your teen. If this ability is in question you should be involved with the youth group too. Most youth pastors would really welcome the assistance.
