I've got a question about the rotation and drama "layout" for Egypt 2010.
My church has done both Jerusalem 08 & Rome 09. We noticed that the small format change between these two programs made a big difference in the atmosphere of the program. In Jerusalem the rotations were Marketplace/Games/Synagogue while Rome's rotations were Marketplace/Games/Paul-Cave. In Jerusalem, when the drama happened the entire population of kids and adults would gather from wherever they were and join in the action together at the same time. In Rome, the dramas only involved the Marketplace groups in each rotation. Alot of our helpers were disappointed that they couldn't see the dramas unfold if they were not in the Marketplace. Our Paul & Brutus were especially disappointed with being stuck in the house for the whole program.
Granted, I understand that Paul's house and the Cave needed to be separated from the rest of the commotion to get the full effect, but at the same time our volunteers felt this year was more divided because of it. They missed having the entire "city" rush to gather and see the dramas & the fact that although there were different "stations" people could still be involved with the other areas' excitement. It felt more like one big city that way. So, I was just wondering which setup Group is using this year for Egypt. I'm not sure if Joseph's Journey is going to be setup more like Paul's house in Rome or the Synagogue in Jerusalem.
Also, are the dramas going to be per rotation again or a mass performance like in Jerusalem? With 2 years of Holyland experience under our belt we're probably going to tweak it so that the dramas include everyone like they did in our first year with the program. Any heads up on the "Joseph's Journey" section would be great so that I can start setting up our VBS committee! Thanks!

During Rome, our dramas were enacted 6 times each evening. That way EVERYBODY got a chance to see it while they were in the marketplace. Granted some groups saw it twice in the same evening, but it worked out well for us to do it that way. And since we built in breaks for every marketplace shopkeeper and for Paul, Brutus & the underground church members, even they got a chance to see every drama.

| Just a suggestion but we had our drama during our Extollo opening time. It worked out really well and everyone got to see it. We even had a child ask how we were getting home from Rome.

We actually cut the dramas out of Egypt, since we felt like kids and adults didn't need the additional reinforcement. The experiences in the Joseph station were really powerful, and he walks them through the daily story in a unique way. So it means fewer volunteers for you to round up, AND fewer logistics to deal with

| BIG mistake to remove the dramas. We enlisted our senior adults and a few of the youth last year and they did a phenomenal job. It REALLY made the Rome Marketplace come alive and have more meaning to the Bible content. Of course we had to tweak the dramas a bit, and completely add the final one to make sense of the week, but don't every leave them out. After seeing the results last year, I know the kids totally got the Bible meaning for the day and week!!

We did not include the dramas, for lack of volunteers, however, we did not feel it detracted from the program. Our expectations regarding Rome was more than we ever imagined.
We are looking forward to Egypt!

Richard--your seniors will have PLENTY to do in Egypt. You'll need actors to be Rameses (Joseph's guard) and Joseph, as well as an actor (Hanu) in the Games time. We found that our hammiest actors made awesome shopkeepers, too. They totally got into being embalmers, artists, and animal keepers. WAY over the top!

I am really sad to hear the dramas were cut for Egypt. This was such a key experience for us in the Marketplace in Rome. I think it is a HUGE mistake on the publishers part to eliminate them.
