For our start to Sunday school this Fall with our new Buzz curriculum, we are thinking of going with a Bee type theme.  I can decorate black/yellow, but am at a loss for activities or even food (other than honey).  While the teachers are excited about the new Buzz curriculum, we would like to get the entire congregation excited!  We try to give the families and kids some fun (activities and snacks) while registering the children.  Any suggestions?

Nancy

you can make easy flower cup cakes by cutting large marshmallows in 4ths and dipping in colored sugar and placing on a frosted cup cake, in a flower shape...

How about getting some yellow ping pong balls , coloring with markers stripes around them, glueing googly eyes and making wings from white paper or felt and a black triangle from felt or paper for a tail. Make a "hive" from an empty large cookie container (Costco type of animal cracker container , spray paint gold or brown. Let the kids try to get the bees into the "hive". Or do the same idea with a hoola hoop, flying the bees through the rings.

Here is a simple recipe for honey cake:

Or make your own honey doughnuts:

Also, what about letting the kids make black and yellow pencil pals?  Just use yellow and black pipe cleaners, two pom poms (I'd do black) and google eyes.  They could make them with minimal help.   We made these recently and the kids had a blast.  It's also something fun for them to take home AND a new pencil for school!

OR could they each color a generic outline of a bee and make each one individual?  Those could be added as decorations for the room AND help folks learn the kids' names if you put the names on them!  If you Google "Bee coloring page" there are tons available!

Here are some ideas we've done here at Group to celebrate launching Buzz:

- We decorated using bee catching traps - they look like beehives! Something like this...

- Here's a recipe for a beehive cake. I just made the cookies that are seen around the cake, and they were a big hit.

- We took pictures of the staff who worked on Buzz (you could get your volunteers) and cut them into hexagon shapes, then arranged them like a bee hive

- We gave out Bit-O-Honey candy - we had a spinner with bees on it and they spun to see how many pieces of candy they would get

- We dressed all in black with yellow sashes as stripes, and we wore antenna headbands

- We painted a giant beehive shape and cut a doorway in it

Also, since Buzz is so interactive, maybe you could pick out a couple of cards and do those activities right there in your lobby. Kids and parents could get a little taste of Buzz!

Hope these ideas help!

We have decided to have a make your own sundae bar for the children while the adults register.  We have a few games with B or Bee themes and pencils with our church name on them.  We are decorating with the beatitudes and just need a few more ideas, but this is what we have so far.
