I'm just curious as to how some of you teach your youth class. What I mean by that is....do you use curriculum, do you teach on topics, teach on a certain scripture, etc.

Are you required by your Pastor to teach a certain way or are you allowed to teach what you feel like the Lord leads you to teach?

I have had some tell me that I should teach a certain way or use certain resources and I'm just curious as to how some of you come up with your lessons for class.

Hi Sheila,

For our youth program, I am able to do what I want.  I usually talk to the kids and see what direction they want to move with regards to Bible studies.  Last year we used a few of the Nooma videos which I thought were fantastic.  They had some easy questions and made for some great discussions!  I am not sure what I am going to do this year??

Sorry I cant be more help!

In Christ,
Karyn Bonikowsky

I listen to the kids to and create lessons that meet their needs. Most kids this age are needing to see that God is real, how they fit into His plan, and how to apply the Bible to their lives.

Every group is different. One group I had could barely read so helping them with Bible vocabulary was important. Just basic understanding of the word. My current group are brilliant students already Bible savvy. I Gotta step it up a notch. Their interests so far have been "What Happens When You Die", and about heaven.

I am actually shocked at the lack of oversight of pastors but fine without the interference. I do my best to be theologically correct.

It's great that you are concerned. Group has lots of stuff you can trust. Also, studies have shown that discussion groups are more likely to have a positive impact over sermons unless you are a really dynamic speaker.

Teach the way that works best for you. If someone makes a suggestion about what and how to teach ask them to come ask them to plan a lesson and teach it while you observe.

God bless you and keep it up.

In the past at different times i have been given curriculum to use, and i have had freedom to do what i will. Every time i am given curriculum, those in charge have turned around and agreed to let me do my own thing. I really don't like microwave lessons any more than TV dinners. I tend to do much better creating my own home cooked meal. They are usually MUCH more Biblically sound, and they tend to fit the students lives much better. However, i have also been through Bible college and have a gift of teaching. There are some people that i have known that if they were in a teaching environment i would definitely want them to use a given curriculum. They may be great people who have a passion for God, but their theology is spotty at best and i wouldn't trust them to teach my kids for an extended time period if they were given free reign. There are other people who just work best from a pre-set curriculum, and a pre-set curriculum helps everyone to be on the same page.

Ultimately, IF you are being asked to use a pre-arranged curriculum and you don't like it. (THEN) Say something and show them what you would like to do. IF your leadership still wants you to use it, use it. They may have a very good reason for wanting to use it. Ultimately they are your leaders and have a responsibility for what happens and is taught in your class. (THEN) Please respect their decision and pray about it. Who knows how GOD may change the situation.

Thank you.....I have done numerous different things with my kids over the years, I get "ideas" from curriculum then find scripture and create a lesson, We have nights that we just talk about what's on their mind, I also pay close attention to things that they talk about in casual conversation and use that for lessons, and have even had them write down questions that they would like answered and use that for lessons. Every time taht I study I ask the Lord to show me the things to write (I'm a note taker) that I can share with the kids, things He wants them to hear.

We have a new family that has come into our church and they are the ones that are hitting us up to use curriculum. Our Pastor chooses his teachers very well, with alot of prayer, before he puts us in those positions. So when he has chosen a teacher he usually has full confindence in the fact that the teacher will rely on God to prepare for class. This family seems to think that we need to use only curriculum to teach so that if we are asked we will be able to "show and tell" what we are teaching on. I keep notes so i can show and tell with that ! They say it is just my opinion, but isn't curriculum just someones opinion?

I am glad to see that I am not totally off base with the way I teach.

Thanks Again
