| This is a question about this Sunday's lesson in Hands-On Bible MAX. I posted it in that forum, but I know that this one gets lots of traffic year-round, so I though I would post it here as well to see what you all think: The lesson is about Adam and Eve's sin, Genesis 3:1-15,23-24. One activity in the lesson is to have the kids do a race across the room in which they have to walk very fast, but not run. The questions to ask are: How did it feel to not be allowed to run? What did you think as you were walking as fast as you could? How is that like what happened to Adam and Eve? I have to "confess", I have no clue as to the answer to that last question. So how can I use it with the kids? Does anyone know what the intention was here? Thanks!

Is it about following the rules even when we don't want to????

| No, just the definition of sin. But maybe it could be because you would want to run to win the race, but the rule is to walk very fast only. I guess. It comes right after a discussion of Adam and Eve being kicked out of the Garden of Eden.

Well, here's my take on it:
If the answer to the previous questions lead to discussions of 'wanting to run' or 'hard to only walk fast when trying to win' or 'I really wanted to win and running would have got me there faster' or something like that, then I think the last question relates to how our body/physical/sinful nature usually wants/desires things that may go against the rules. And we are easily swayed by our physical nature to do the things we want even when they are wrong. I bet the fruit on the forbidden trees looked like the most delicious of all the fruit Adam & Eve could see -- it's hard to resist the things you want when they are right there within your reach.
And, depending on what actually happens during your race - if there are some kids that DO run instead of walk, and if others run because they see someone else run... that leads to a whole other side of the issue. We often sin because we see others sinning, or others convince us the sin is not really sin (or not that bad)... Eve listened to the serpent, who twisted God's Words into partial truths and falsehoods, then Adam sinned because he saw Eve do it (and presumably also heard the serpent's logic).
BTW, I should tell you I do not know anything about the Hands-on-Bible MAX curriculum, or the ages your dealing with. So my take on all this could be way more than what is intended... but I hope it helps.

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." ~Matthew 28:19-20

| Wow! Thanks! MY group for MAX is a mixed Grades K-5. I guess I was just a little slow on the uptake on this one. But then again, Group usually puts in suggestions as to what the responses might be when you ask a question. In this manual, they don't do that. I knew I would get an answer here! The original post in the BibleMAX forum is untouched! Thanks again. Any more ideas? I'll check back.

| WOW Cassie!! Can I just say WOW!!! I don't know a thing about this curriculum or the lesson and I was just reading thru the post and as I read your response I said "we could use that for an object lesson for kids or teens". You take on that was great, God has really given you a gift to tell something with such a flair that I was fascinated. I just had to tell you how blown away I was and to say thank you. Melissa - NY

| Just to let you all know - the game worked. I did it in the form of a relay, since we had limited space, and that made it easier to explain. The interesting thing was, even though I started taunting them to "go ahead and run - how are you going to win?", NO ONE disobeyed and ran. They were all perfect examples. Now if they would just do that in real life, right? I believe they got the point. One said it was frustrating to only walk, but she still didn't disobey.
