Hi! I am the director of my church's VBS and I am looking at Group for next summer. I really like what I have seen on the website so far. I have a question about crafts. I saw pictures of the crafts that you can purchase on the website, but does the Craft's book offer any alternative suggestions for handmade crafts? We are a small church with a small budget...especially in these economic times and I want to be a really good steward of the money that we have for VBS. We do a fundraiser to help cover the cost of our VBS.
Thanks for any info you can pass along!
Blessings!

Jackie

In the crafts folder/manual there is usually an alternitive craft listed on the back page labeled "bonus craft."  I thought some of them were better than the web-site crafts.  With a little creative thinking you probably could come up with some great crafts on your own.

For day 1--we are making a boat using the botom of a pringles single serving container--hot glueing in a straw for the mast, Then we tape on a card stock sail and gluestick on tissue paper for a flag.  The Bible buddies fit nicely inside and this is serving as our bible buddy holder/ring this year.  It could be used for day 2 (I think) instead of the nut shell boat.

Jackie,
I am also in a small church with a small budget. I seldom use the crafts. Many times I can figure out how to make a similar item in a cheaper way. Check out Oriental Trading for some cheaper craft ideas as well. I often put a plea out to the congregation ahead of time for some supplies - like if I need paper towel rolls, or pringles cans, etc. Keep watching the forum - I get a lot of good ideas here, too.

Thanks for the Pringles can boat idea. I love it and plan on using it. I think that I'm going to use long craft sticks or cut down cheap down rods for the masts - a bit sturdier than the straw. I also have material scraps that I think I'll use for the flag - less likely to tear. I can see the kids using this at home for a crayon or pencil holder, too! Again, thanks for the idea - it's a great one for churches on a tight budget!

We use Guildcraft and Oriental Trading. We have also made up our own versions.

KatBat if you have a pic of your craft would you please share. I would love to see what your boats look like. I am having a hard time coming up with cheaper ways to do crafts. Thanks

Which Bible Point are you using it for? How are you incorporating it into the lesson?
