Hi all,

We do VBS for 4 days and have about 110 kids.  I've ordered for 120 kids

I am really getting excited abuot this years theme - so many possible craft ideas.  Our budget's been lowered, so went on the hunt for crafts about .50 or less per child.  Here's what I came up with:

Day 1:  God's Word is True - canvas slap bracelet from OTC (5 out of 5 positive reviews from OTC customers) @ $4.99/dz  The kids will hot glue with adult supervision - or use glue dots to put on a mini compass from dealextreme.com @ .16 each.  They will also decorate the bracelets with jems or permanent markers or fabric glue - we have these on hand.  We are going to use these for our day one craft AND the God sightings bracelet, so that will save us about $84.00 to not order those separately.

Day 2:  God's word is comforting - Dolphin sand art key chain @ 4.99/dz.  Again, these had high ratings from cutomers.  I have shyed away from OTC due to "cheap" products, but will now order if it has positive customer reviews. The sand is $1.49/22 oz - I needed 60 oz, but ordered 120 oz due to spillage factor - $8.00

Day 3:  God's word is surprising - craft box clearance from OTC - may be running out - They had them from 3.99/dz (out of stock) - to 4.99/dz.  The kids will glue sea shells  - 3.99 for 2800 pieces on the top and put stickers around the sides.  May have something to jump out when they open the lid, but may just have the kids use it as a trinket box.

Day 4 God's word is life changing - fish sun catchers - 3.99/dz They also had thermometer fish suncathcers 7.99/dz.  I think I will order the thermometer ones - to tie in with life changing - the idea of temperature, plus, it is a keeper.  It will be $98.00 for 120, that will bring my total to $301.00 - just still need to get the paint for the suncathers.

hope this may be helpful to others,

 happy sailing!

We have used the suncatchers before and the paint is pretty expensive.  We found that permanent markers worked better than the paint - they were logistically easier, gave great colour and we had them on hand already!

Be careful with OTC.  I've used them for years, but have learned to be pickier and really look at the details.  Most of the crafts are too difficult or too tedious for 3-5 year olds.  I love that they added reviews!  I've found them very useful.

You do have to be careful with OTC - read the reviews of every product - before ordering.

So far, we are doing

Day one - sailor hats to decorate then wear for the week

Day two - magic scratch ship ornaments from otc

Day three - color your own spyglass - again otc

Day four - compass bracelets - otc

Day five - dbt - kid to kid outreach with local  charity

God be with you all in your endeavors in His service!

Day 3 - OTC keychain snake clip-on kit

Day 4 - Groups Toss and Turn

Here's our plan
Day 1 - Tshirts. We do this every year and the kids love it. I have them bring a tshirt (we have some extras). We use acrylic paints and foam stamps from OT to decorate.
We will decorate the shirts for the preschoolers. Preschoolers will do spygl made from painted cardboard tubes. Same Idea as the ones from group but do our own with a sticker sheet.
Day 2 - Pillowcases. Just bought at pillowcases.net for $12.35/doz. We think kids will keep standard cases longer than small stuffed ones. Haven't decided how I'm going to decorate yet.
Day 3 - Spirit of the Seas Picture Frames from OT
Day 4 - Spirit of the Seas Prayer Box from OT
Day 5 - Blankets. Not sure if will do the ones from Group or on our own. Usually we do the O2K thing but this year I think we are going to give them to an organization that helps women who keep their babies. We will probably collect supplies for them too.

I wasn't very impressed the group crafts this year. I think this is the first time I haven't done any of theirs. Also my budget was cut again so I have to save where I can.

If you want a cute idea for Day 2 the alternate craft the boat in the bottle is so cute . We made the boats out of a sheet of brown and a sheet of white foam the the local hardware store gave us the hex nuts and the school cafeteria collected water bottles for us Cost us $2.00 for the whole group I had my 4 year old Grandson make it and he didn't have a problem. If you are on a linited budget like we are it was great!!!!

Gwen,
I am also doing the treasure boxes from OTC. I used permanent markers to color a couple and they work perfectly for holding business cards. I printed up cards with the VBS website and info. and put them in the chest on the VBS table. Very cute. I'm also going to put something inside. Our kids take all of their crafts home on the last day, so after they decorate them on Wed., I'm going to put a sticker on the inside that they'll find once they take it home.

For the God sightings bracelets we are using the canvas bracelets
from OTC. You decorate them with markers. We used the slap bracelets
last year but after a day or two they came apart and the kids got
cuts from the metal inside. The canvas bracelets have a velcro
closure.
