We are leaning towards having:

Candle Shop - 2 ways to make candles, think this will be very popular

Sandal Shop- as described in Group or Pastor Joe's posting

Toy Shop- Making boats- has anyone tried the OTC ones to see if they float?

Musical Instruments- anklet instruments- a friend is coming up with the design to try to make authentic looking- probably other items as well- have done this for 2 years so trying hard not to duplicate

Fishermans Hut- thinking of having many different things fish-related for the kids to do in here-net tying, etc..

Farmers Market (with all our food there)

Jewelry- shell and bead necklaces

Carpentry- menorahs, cedar bags- have the shopkeepers working on a big project-maybe a boat or something for the church

Anyone else come up with any other ideas?

Blessings to all,

Jayne

We have two extra shops.  One is the Tiny-Tots shop.  It will have a different project everyday that is super easy for our preschoolers.  They then visit the other shops whe they are done.  We are thinking of things like the fishing pole project from OTC, sand playdough etc.

We also will do the "Surf n Turf" that has leftovers from the previous two years.  This will be great for our new kids especially.  We have dye, dreidels, mosaics, wooden rulers, perfume bottles, weaving, and basket making left over.

I have also heard of brick making, with mud and straw and wooden forms. The kids could stomp the straw and mud and then pour it into the forms and let it dry in the sun.  I would LOVE to try this.  I think we will next year. Luckily, we do ours outdoors!

I am not familiar with the HL one this year and you might not want to repeat a shop from JM, but let me tell you even the adults are asking me when are we going to have another Spice Shop!  I know I would defenitely have another one when/if I do GBS.

This is our third HL.  We did a spice shop for the first two and it was a major hit!  The woman who ran it was a natural!  Maybe next year we'll bring it back.  I just wanted to do new things to keep VBS fresh.   This year the same woman is very excited about doing the candle shop !

We did the mud bricks the first year.  It was so much fun!  Surprisingly, the girls seemed to enjoy it more than the boys!  We are outdoors as well.  It was everything a kid-friendly activity should be- hands(or rather feet) on, messy and fun!

Take Care.

I'm really struggling with my shops this year.  I've got plenty of good projects, but they're not matching up too well.  We like to do 6 shops, with 2 projects in each shop.  That's proving to be problematic.  I know for sure we want to do these projects:
  • carpet sandals
  • large group net
  • quilt hoop drum & jingle sticks (obviously a music shop)
  • marble pouch
  • sand candles
  • shell jewelry
  • "birch" bark bowl

We also want to make some sort of commemorative Christmas ornament using wood fish.  Don't know what we're doing there yet.  Maybe something like this Fishers of Men Sign. Baskets are always easy, and there are plenty of good kits out there.

What else goes with the sandals . . . and the candles?  (Look Ma -- I made a rhyme! )  And I'm torn about the boats.  I just don't feel like coloring a piece of wood seems very crafty.  Guildcraft has these carving blocks, but what are the kids supposed to do with them when they're done?  (For .37, I supposed I need to get over myself and accept that they'll ultimately go in the trash the next time the kids' rooms get cleaned out.)  Maybe a picture frame with shells glued on it for their VBS photo?  I also thought about some sort of rope belt made from tied knots that could go with the sandals as a garment shop.

HELP!

We are thinking of doing a disciple shop where they can make disciple shields with the disciple's symbol on them. Or can make a shield with their name and tribe on it. Disciple mosiac with paper and tissue pieces. Disciple coloring pages also. One sample would look like this:

Andrew

Andrew and his brother Simon were fishermen.
They lived in Capernaum.
They had a fishing business with James and John.

He was convinced Jesus was the Messiah.
He wanted to follow Jesus.
Andrew was the first apostle.
Andrew got his brother Simon, to meet Jesus.
Later Jesus came for Andrew and Peter saying, "I will make you fishers of Men."
At the feeding of the five thousand, Andrew brought the little boy to Jesus.
Andrew in the Bible

Matthew 4:18; 10:3
Mark 1:16; 1:29; 3:18
Luke 6:14; 1:40-44; 6:8; 12:22
Acts 1:13

Anyone interested in the complete set we have put together just let us know. Email nicketti@hotmail.com and ask for the disciple folders. There are 2, one word documents, the other pictures.

What type candles are you thinking about?  We are going to have a candle shop and I found beeswax candle sheets that can be made into different types of candles and you don't have to worry about melting the wax.  Was wondering what kind of candles you were thinking about?  Thanks.

We're thinking of the sand candles that Sheli posted earlier this year.  We're going to do a trial run next week over Spring Break.  I'll post some pics when we do.
