The most common solution seems to be making your own soap flakes by using a cheese grater to grate ivory soap or a pure vegetable soap. You want to avoid detergents.
Here's a piece of advice I found on the Internet:
Place the soap flat on its widest side and use the side of the grater with the long openings (2 inch slits).
I also contacted the distributor of soap flakes manufacture in the United Kingdom. I was informed that you cannot purchase their soap flakes in stores, but you can order from them.
This is what I was told:
Some school teachers purchase our 8lb or 20lb Soap Flakes "repacks" which we sell at a discount. We experience quite a bit of damage while importing the soap.
