| | has anyone used group's vbs curriculum in something other than a 5-day format? we've always done it monday to friday mornings, but we're considering trying something different this year to make it easier for volunteers. has anyone tried something like tuesday to saturday mornings, or wednesday to saturday mornings (2 sessions on saturday)? i'd like to hear what others have tried, and how it went! thanks! |

| We hold ours on Sunday through Thursday evenings. We find that we have more volunteers able to serve in the evenings, and we have a much better turnout on Sunday than we do on Fridays because our attendance (and number of volunteers) always dropped dramatically on Fridays.

| | Saluki, We do the same thing - Sunday to Thursday evenings. I had to change to Monday to Friday evenings the last 2 years and attendance did drop dramatically on Friday.

| | I have often wanted to have a portion on Saturday too, but it has never gone over with BCE. We have ours M-F 9:00am-noon. But you have given me a great idea, how about a kick-off and registration the Sunday before we start? This year would be June 24. We could on the invitations to VBS include and invite the entire family to Worship, pot-luck brunch (always get volunteers for that) and a mini-opening for families. Maybe include a little something for early registration. That would help with the mass registration Monday morning which always gets my opening delayed a bit. Wow, thanks for this thread...what do y'all think? As the dates get closer Praise God the ideas start screaming! (Some a lot better than others!)

| | You mentioned something about early registration...here's something we started last year that really helped with that day 1 chaos. We wanted a way to encourage as many kids as possible (especially those who regularly attend our church) to get registered before VBS, so we came up with an idea to track it and publicly post who had preregistered. We used the flags from the Fund your VBS kit and hung them from fishing line in our foyer. Each kid had their own flag with their name on it. Each week our banner grew, and it was great fun for the kids to find their flag. It was also great for the rest of the congregation to have something tangible to see a little of the impact of VBS before it even started. It REALLY helped that first day too. Registration went so much faster and was so much easier for those who hadn't preregistered (mostly people who don't attend our church). We also had the preregistered "express lane". That was a big help too. This year we're gonna use the "Avalanche Ranch Supersize Display" and hang something (haven't decided yet) with the kids' names on them on it.

| I love that idea! I can never get anyone to preregister. I think the main cause is that most of the kids in our church have their parents helping, so they are so busy planning, they don't take the time. We do our VBS Monday through Friday from 5:30-8. I considered last year doing it Sunday through Thursday for the same reason, low attendance on Friday. I think I'll bring that up at our first meeting.

| Hi! This is my first year using Group curriculum, but I wanted to tell you how we've done VBS the last few years. We actually go Wednesday night through Sat night, and then end on Sunday morning. We don't actually do any rotation Sunday morning. The kids just practice a program with the songs and verses we've learned and then present it to the congregation and their parents during worship service. Just wanted to let you know one more option!

| | I did registration for 3 years for our VBS. What helped with ours was to have online registration. To help the parents out, because most of our parents were involved in the bible school, I filled out the forms for our church's kids. I, of course, had to ask about about allergies, etc, but for the most part I could fill them out. Also, I kept a list of address from previous years and then added names and changed info as needed (table format in Microsoft Word). All I had to do then was to confirm addresses and phone numbers with parents as they came in with their kids. I would then fill out a registraton card for each child. ( I would write down the kids names on card and fill out the other information later, for the kids were were already listed on my roll.) I also kept attendance on the registration cards. I would put M,T, W, T, F in a top or buttom corner of the card (for each day of the week) and if the child came I put a check mark under the letter. If they didn't come that day, I put an X. The preacher liked to have a daily count as to the number of kids, and I found it much easier to count the cards, since I had written the daily attendence on them. We didn't give out anything for attendence, but it was just nice to see what the attendence was for each kid. One year we also used the previous years address list and sent a letter on a themed stationary or with clip art telling what the theme was and requesting that they register early via the website. We may have sent registration cards with the letter, I don't remember. |
