| We did a trial run of the rope making project Group suggests in the Shopkeeper manual. When we first started, we thought it was going to be kind of dumb. My friend, Mary, said, "This won't look good." Then we started twisting and said, "Well . . . this will take all of 30 seconds!" We were wrong on both accounts! It took several minutes to do it, and that was with 2 adults doing the twisting. You have to twist it tight and make sure it's starting to kink up before you fold it in half. But then it looks great! We wound up with a 3' piece of rope and decided it would make a great belt if it were a little longer. I think we'll cut 12' lengths of rope to start with. Here's a funny story about it: When we made it, it was just me and Mary at the church. We finished twisting and talking about using it as a belt. I said, "You just know some goofy kid is going to tie this around his head for a headband." A little while later, Mary's kids came to church. We were working on other projects and her kids began chasing each other around the fellowship hall. We turned to look at them and noticed that they were BOTH running around . . . with the ropes tied around their heads!!! Don't know how well you can see the detail, but here's a pic:

BIG problem! I can't find the cotton clothesline for under .10 per foot! If the kids only make a 3' belt, it'll take a total of 18' of clothesline -- that's $1.80 per project!!! I searched all over the web yesterday and couldn't find anything. Today, I went to Dollar Tree and they had none. Wal Mart's clothesline was .40 per foot -- yikes!!! Gotta find an alternative for this one. I'm going to try jute to see what it looks like. It won't be as fat, but it's sure a heck of a lot cheaper! I'll post a pic when I do.

| No point in posting the picture -- the jute rope looked terrible. I'm thinking we might just ask the congregation to donate the clothesline. I don't typically ask for donations of things like that because we have a good VBS budget and we do a special offering to bolster what the church gives us. I'm afraid people will start wondering why we don't have enough money. It's primarily the principle: I can't stand to make a twisted piece of clothesline the most expensive craft we do! But I do love the project and I know the kids would really enjoy it and think it's cool. I think I'm just going to subtly say in a couple of announcements that we need empty ice cream pails and 40' bundles of clothesline. Hopefully, no one will raise their eyebrows and question it.

Amy, I love the look of those ropes you did. I will definitely kep my eye out for rope that is cheaper. I will let you know if we find it. If we don't find it, I think we will skip that shop. What a disappointment!

Some dollar stores sell cotton-poly clothesline for $2 or $3 per 100 feet. I bought some $2 packages from a Family Dollar store and plan to experiment with it.

| Top of my to-do list: Go straight to Family Dollar for cheap clothesline! Thanks for that tip! I just noticed the other post about the palm trees. I somehow missed that when it was new. Here's a link to where I posted some detailed directions in the Jerusalem Marketplace section for how we made ours. I added a picture. Let me know if you have any questions about them.
