| I would encourage any Youth Pastor to read "The Seven Checkpoints for Youth Leaders: Principles Every Teenager Needs to Know." I have the book and think that it's a great resource for Youth Pastors and how to plan their Youth Ministry. Here's a link for more information on the book. http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=291772&p=1018818 God Bless, Josh T. in Ohio

I am a Middle School Sunday School teacher as well. I have never found a book or curriculum that soots me. Maybe I'm just hard to please. There are many web sites that offer lesson plans but most seem to be "bubble- gum" lessons. Middle School kids are ready for some serious theology. Anyways, I always make my own lessons. I do look around the other web sites for ideas but mostly I listen to the kids and pray. They ask some great questions that can be the basis for the next weeks lesson.
Here's what works for me (in a nut shell): To make a lesson decide on what you want to say in one sentence. Then use a Bible software concordance to pick out the verses (4 or 5) you need to support your statement. Make sure not to take verses out of context. Come up with discussion questions that lead the kids to discover the truth you want them to learn. Have them read the verse and answer your question.
It's a little scary at first but as you relax the process goes better. Feel free enough with your kids to let the lesson become something different if they need to vent. I usually have several lessons in my bag to choose from. Sometimes I put the lesson away and just play or hang.
Sunday School is a blast and this age group is great. Let the Holy Spirit lead your heart and love them.

We used this: http://www.lifeway.com/lxvi/ with both middle and high school students and it's really good, plus you can add or delete what you want. They have an older and younger track so it can fit the age group you work with. In 6 years a 7th grader will graduate and will have been through the entire Bible which I think is cool.

| The best series my Sunday School teacher ever did was on David and his family. I don't remember much of it, but I do remember it being really fantastic. She did the few people before David, and several of the people after him, but you could follow it straight up to Jesus if you felt like it. (EEK!) I tried to start a Sunday School class for high school grads and misfits, which didn't actually work out, but my thought was to pick a certain part of the Bible for everyone to read then come together and talk about it. For example, to read Philippians over the week and on Sunday everyone shares what impacted them and what confused them and what challenged them. More like a small-group Bible study than a Sunday School class, but there's nothing wrong with that. :-) My last idea is Growing In Jesus by Doug Fields. I think he has a couple of other books as well. If your order the books from Amazon or Christian Book Distributors (CBD) you get a really good price. Hope some of these ideas help you out a bit! God bless...Katie

| Wow Youthguy, you've got your hands full. My wife and I teach 9-12, the difference in learning style & comprehension of a 9th grade boy and a 12th grade girl is like that of 2 different species of animals. I can't imagine the prep you must have to put in. God bless you, Pat

Hey, This summer I am also teaching that age group and decided to use one of Doug Fields small group books, "Serving Others in Love". It has a dvd along with it for leaders purposes. We will also be doing service projects this summer to go along with the study. Just a sug.

We have a 7-12 Sunday school class also. This summer we are taking a walk through the Bible. We started with Genesis and every Sunday we talk about the stories and what they mean to us in 2007. The Sunday school teachers are prepared to go through many chapters each meeting, but usually they only get through one story because the kids have so many questions. I like to study the Word on Sundays and what the Word says about issues and hot topics during our youth meetings. There are several books out that can help give more insight if you choose to walk through the books of the Bible; just search Bible and walk on Amazon.

We use Student Life's Bible study. It is flexible and takes students through a cycle so a student that attends jr and sr high Sunday School they will have covered a planned out, mapped out study of doctrine. They package "doctrine" so it is a fun, interactive study and easy to lead with pre-fabbed lesson plans or you can build your own. We don't have Sunday School but have small groups in homes and our leaders and students really like the Student Life stuff.
