| We finished AR today but we had a pretty serious problem! I sent someone else to buy the vanilla oil used in Chadder earlier in the week and then in Hot Bible Adventures on Day 5. I usually am extremely careful but did not think to check this....please double check what you purchase! We used a vanilla oil sold in the craft store but one of the kids accidently got way too much on his hand (he was overly excited) and when he sniffed the oil it went up his nose. The oil specifically stated not to get on the skin and to keep away from kids and pets! His nose and skin began burning and several other kids were complaining about their hands burning. Thankfully we had a medic on the premises who got his nose washed out and irrigated with saline solution. The other kids had to wash and soak their hands. Please make sure you double check. One mom embarrassingly told us that vanilla oil sold for intimate purposes was considered "edible" and would have been considered safe. Other than that - it all went great!

| OOH MY GOSH!! That is terrible, sorry that happened to you! Thanks for the heads up! I bought mine at Dollar Tree, I will have to check the label. Glad everything turned out alright, your lucky to have a medic at your disposal. I was wondering why you called it "Hot Bible Adventures", now I know! Would a vanilla scented lotion work just as well, or not? You know this got me to thinking, I don't even know if my church has a First Aid kit on hand or anything. Definately something I will find out about Sunday. I'm sorry what happened isn't funny at all, but what the mom admitted to you about the "intimate edible vanilla oil" got me laughing. Not sure the church would reimburse me for that receipt - LOL !! Congratulations on finishing what I hope was a tremendously successful VBS, minus the "hot bible adventures" episode! Okay please tell all, how many children made the "Commitment"? Can't wait to hear all about your VBS!

| Thanks for the warning. It is now a simple thing we can all check to ensure the kids are safe.

Be sure you look for the oils that are found in the soap-making section of your local craft and hobby stores. They'll be fine for use on skin.

I have considered this vanilla oil thing alot and I'm not sure about it. I know that I am NOT a majority here, but I have terrible skin problems and am allergic to many chemicals. As a result, I have to watch very carefully what I put on my skin. I am just wondering about kids who might have these sorts of problems. I really want to do the lesson with this, but I will definitely be careful to ask about skin allergies.

I was actually thinking that I may purchase some vanilla scented lotion from Bath & Body Works instead, as it is very aromatic and I believe would eliminate the risks involved with using the oil.

| How about vanilla extract? I haven't actually read this part of the manual, but I assume it has to do with smell... Laura

| I'm wondering if the oil is used to mask the smell of the onion. Does oil work better than say scented lotion? Is it used because it doesn't wash away as easily and you want the kids to be able to smell it all day? I am concerned about the use of oil now. It is somewhat expensive, especially if you have to buy 3-4 bottles to have enough for each crew in Wild Bible Adventures or Prairie Dog Preschool Chadder's Theater. I'm also curious about how the onion activity went for those who have completed AR. Allison

| Oops, I didn't mean to confuse anyone. The oil is also used on Day 2 in Chadders' Wild West Theater, not in the Prairie Dog Chadder's Theater. Sorry, my bad. Although, don't believe the back of the Wild Bible Adventures Leader Pack in the supply list. It says "the Chadder's Wild West Theater Leader will use this on Day 1" They use the oil on Day 2. You can also get the vanilla oil in the candy making section of the hobby store. Either the soap, candle oils, or the candy oil should be safe to use. I plan to get the candy flavoring oil since it is entirely edible in case someone happens to get it near their mouth.
Make sure it is not the scented oil for use as a room freshener. There are all kinds of chemicals in those.
